march from the farm
February was a hard month on the farm.
At 2 a.m., my husband and I were sliding across the ice to the greenhouse in pajamas, puffy coats, and headlamps, trying to refill the generator one last time before morning. The ice storm had already knocked the power out, but we thought we had prepared for the worst. The generator was ready, backup propane tanks were full, and we had done everything we could think of to protect the heated greenhouse.
But sometime after that last refill the generator stalled.
For five hours the temperature outside hovered around 3°F. By morning the greenhouse was frozen and the crop was lost—or at least that’s what we thought when we first walked inside.
After the thaw, this is what we were facing.
In the days that followed we started cutting everything back, assuming there was little hope for the ranunculus and poppies that had already put on so much growth through the warm early winter. But plants have a way of surprising you. Slowly, small signs of life began to appear again.
Now here we are in the middle of March, and while we certainly lost a large portion of the crop, some of the toughest plants pushed through the cold and began growing again.
It won’t be the lush early harvest we had planned, but there will still be flowers this spring—and that feels like a small victory after a storm like that.
After a winter like this, every flower feels a little more hard-won.
Over the next few weeks we’ll begin seeing those first blooms making their way into bouquets, and I’m starting to plan ways to share them throughout the season.
After a winter like this, every flower feels a little more hard-won.
One idea I’m exploring this year is a Terra Flower Farm seasonal flower membership, and I would love to know if there’s interest before opening spots.
The membership would run April through October, bringing flowers from the farm straight into your home each month.
